Holy Family Physical Education 2011-2012

Goals

1.  Full student effort and participation in every class
2.  Development of appreciation for exercise and physical activity
3.  Demonstration of positive attitudes toward self and others

Expectations / Discipline

Our gym rules are based on respect and student responsibility for their own actions.  The students are expected to:

1.  Respect themselves – have fun and do their best, remembering safety first!
2.  Respect other students as people with different abilities and experiences.  EVERYONE has something to offer to our class.  (no put-downs – of self or others!)
3.  Respect all teachers and staff - be attentive and follow directions.
4.  Respect the P.E. equipment and facilities - only use equipment for its intended use.

In an atmosphere of respect, we will be able to have activity without taking time out to deal with problems.
*These rules are in addition to the school rules*

Discipline problems in P.E. class will be dealt with in one or more of the following ways:
1.  lowering of daily grade
2.  sitting out of activity
Continuing or severe problems will be dealt with according to the Holy Family discipline procedures.
P.E. Attire
Grades K-4:
Students wear their school uniforms to P.E. However, they must wear clean tennis shoes with unmarking soles. These shoes should be worn ONLY for P.E., and should be kept at school. Students will change their shoes in their classroom before coming to the gym. If girls choose to wear skirts/jumpers on P.E. days, they must wear shorts underneath.

Grades 5-8:
Students change into gym clothes for P.E. class. This includes shorts/sweatpants, T-shirt/sweatshirt, and clean tennis shoes. These shoes should be worn ONLY for P.E and should be brought with the student into the gym before changing out of regular shoes.  All gym clothes must comply with the non-uniform clothing rules. One “non-suit” pass is issued each trimester as a freebie. Students may use the pass with no questions asked.
After 2 “non-suit” incidences, the students’ effort/preparation grade will begin to drop.

Evaluation System

Students are evaluated on the quality of participation in each P.E. class period, regardless of their physical ability.  Basic components of participation include:  effort, attitude toward activities and others, sportsmanship, cooperation, attention and preparation.  Students who work at excelling in all of these areas will have a positive effect on their classmates, as well as on their own development.  Daily participation performance is evaluated and then given a point value (stars) that represents one of the following levels:

4 stars – always positive and helpful, shows consistent maximum effort and pays attention to others

3 stars – shows maximum effort most of the time.  He/She is positive toward others and rarely needs extra supervision due to inattention, lack of effort or behavior problems.

2 stars – displays little motivation or effort .  He/She may need to be spoken to more than once about inattention, lack of effort or disruptive behavior.

1 star – shows disrespect for the equipment, teacher and other students.  He/She behaves in a disruptive or unsafe manner.

Excused absences and days when students do not participate due to illness or injury are “non-graded” days.  Their grade is based only on days when they can participate.

In Holy Family Physical Education, EVERYONE has the ability to be successful!

Medicine/Allergies

Holy Family school policy mandates that all medication be brought to the office by a parent, with a doctor’s note. Please note that students are not allowed to have medication with them in the gym (with certain per-approved exceptions). If needed, the student is brought to the office to take medication, or an office representative brings the medicine to the child.
