Sixth and seventh graders made a list of items, places, and words that were meaningful to them in some way (either past or present). We discussed symbolism and looked at many examples of murals, collages, and other narrative art. After sketching out their symbols, the students arranged them on paper in an interesting way. They worked on forming connections between the symbols and creating a piece of art that looks "whole."
